Import browser bookmarks and Pocket files

The Link Jar web app imports browser bookmark HTML and existing Pocket CSV or ZIP exports. Review the file and folder mapping before starting.

Which files can I import?

The web app accepts browser bookmarks HTML in the common Netscape format and existing Pocket CSV or ZIP exports. Use a file you already have; this guide does not assume an old service still offers a new export.

Other bookmark managers may export common browser HTML. Check the actual file rather than assuming a product name guarantees compatibility. Link Jar’s own JSON export is not currently a supported restore format.

  1. Open the web app and sign in.
  2. Unlock your Private Jar, then open Settings → Your data and choose Import.
  3. Select the file and review preview counts and warnings.
  4. Choose how folders map to private boards. Leave unwanted folders ignored.
  5. Review duplicate and merge options, then start the import.
  6. Keep the app available to sync. Read the report for created, skipped or failed links.

The file is parsed on your device. New imported links and newly created boards are private. The app uploads encrypted private records as the import runs; local parsing does not mean the whole import stays only on the device.

What happens to duplicates?

The preview identifies repeated addresses and existing links. Existing public links stay unchanged. If you choose to merge private links, the import can add missing tags and notes. Existing titles and reading state take precedence. Check the report instead of assuming every row became a new bookmark.

What if an import stops?

The app keeps an encrypted local import record so an interrupted job can resume. Reconnect and reopen the same account on that device. Use the report’s retry controls for failed items. Invalid addresses may need correcting in the source file.

Undo checks whether an imported link changed afterward. Later edits can need review. Import-created boards remain because other links may now use them. Keep the original file until you have checked the result.

What should I do next?

Find a few imported links and check their notes, tags and boards. Read how private saves work, then install the browser extension to keep saving from the web.
