How private bookmarks work in Link Jar

Private links are encrypted on your device before upload. Public links remain public, and requested previews, snapshots and AI features have separate data flows.

How do I save a private bookmark?

Choose Private before saving a link. A private board keeps its links private. Link Jar encrypts a private link’s address, title, notes, tags and board details on your device before uploading the record to your AT Protocol account.

Save from the web app or the browser extension. Check visibility before confirming. A public link and its note can be read by others on the network.

Your host stores the encrypted private record. It can still observe metadata, including timing and approximate size. Encryption does not make your account anonymous or hide all network activity.

Public bookmarks are public records. Other apps, relays and people can copy them. Deleting a public save cannot remove every copy held elsewhere.

Do previews, snapshots or AI send my content?

They can. A preview needs a page address. Server snapshot capture needs to load the page. Cloud AI features need the selected input. These are separate operations from storing an encrypted bookmark.

Review the feature’s prompt and settings before using it. Defaults differ by client; the privacy policy’s feature table explains what each feature sends and keeps. A readable copy is also called a snapshot. Capture can fail for pages that require sign-in or do not permit extraction.

What is my Recovery Kit?

Your Recovery Kit is a code or 24 words that unlocks your Private Jar. Keep a copy somewhere secure. Anyone with it can unlock your private data.

An account password reset does not replace it. If no device, passkey or saved recovery material can unlock your private data, Link Jar cannot recover it. Never send your Recovery Kit to support.

What should I check before a sensitive save?

  1. Confirm that Private is selected.
  2. Check whether the action also requests a preview, snapshot or AI processing.
  3. Keep your Recovery Kit securely and separately from account sign-in.
  4. Read the full privacy policy for device storage and service details.

For a local readable copy, see exporting and keeping your links.
